Pretoria NBG: Capacity Development
Staff at the Centre support the capacity development of teachers in various ways. These include sharing new trends and information, practical fieldwork skills, developing learning programmes, and support for project and portfolio tasks with a biodiversity focus, such as:
- Climate Change could cause the 6th Extinction. What happened in the previous extinctions? How do we interpret the environment and what action can learners take to mitigate climate change?
- Biodiversity seems to be a challenging concept to interpret. We look at biodiversity from three different levels: species, ecosystem and genetic diversity. The Pretoria National Botanical Garden portrays examples of South Africa’s biomes.
- How to integrate the Environment into the Curriculum.
- Environmental calendar days such as Arbor Day, Water Week or Biodiversity Day. A workshop can be facilitated to show how your school can celebrate these important environmental days.
We have also developed a workshop on Biodiversity/ Environmental Careers. Teachers will be taken through activities that they can use to introduce learners to biodiversity careers, and what study and work opportunities there are. This will include classroom activities with formative and peer assessments. Each workshop comes with resources.
The Centre also facilitates workshops with Community groups on the listed Environmental Calendar events.
