The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to lead, develop and coordinate the and Reform and Biodiversity Stewardship programme of work  in SANBI and support  the implementation of the National Land Reform and Biodiversity Stewardship Initiative.


Appointment requires a relevant postgraduate qualification in environmental or natural science with a minimum of five years relevant working experience. The incumbent must have knowledge and understanding of the biodiversity stewardship model, protected area and biodiversity legislation, as well as relevant aspects of South Africa’s land reform programme. Familiarity with the basics of rural development and community engagement is required. The suitable candidate must be in possession of a valid Code B driver’s license, as well as be willing to travel. The ability to maintain sound interpersonal relationships and highly effective verbal and written communication capabilities are essential. Proficiency in MS Office is also a specific requirement for this post.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:


  • Lead the development of the Land Reform and Biodiversity Stewardship Initiative (LR&BSI) strategy through engaging with the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) and other key partners to consolidate and expand the LR&BSI.
  • Develop, convene and facilitate the LR&BSI community of practice.
  • Lead on the research, development and implementation of sustainable financing solutions and incentives for LR&BSI ensuring coherence with the broader biodiversity stewardship programme of work.
  • Lead the development of knowledge resources and capacity building related to the LR&BSI.
  • Undertake Project Management activities for the LR&BSI as well as where it interfaces with the Biodiversity Stewardship programme of work.



SANBI offers an annual salary of R 417 552.00 and additional fringe benefits.
