The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to offer strategic leadership to the Biodiversity and Water Security Project. This multi-faceted and multi-stakeholder project, funded by the Global Environment Facility through the DBSA, will simultaneously unlock biodiversity and water benefits, especially in two demonstration catchments in different provinces. It will be implemented over five years,  with over ten partner implementing institutions and many other sector or co-finance partners, ensuring that biodiversity and ecosystem services are integrated into planning, finance and development in the water sector nationally.


This position requires the candidate to be in possession of a post-graduate degree in Natural, Social or Management Sciences or a related field.  A minimum of 8 - 10 years’ experience in project/programme management, of which 5 years must be in middle management. • Extensive knowledge and/or experience of the policy landscape, institutions and prevailing issues in the South African biodiversity and /or water sectors, preference is for working knowledge of both sectors • Experience in working with a range of stakeholders including the three spheres of government, the private sector and civil society around environment management •  Understanding of linkages between biodiversity management and development with a focus on poverty alleviation • Strong leadership, relational and people management skills • Computer literacy with sound knowledge of and working experience in MS Office (Word, Excel and Power Point) • Analytical and conceptual abilities • Facilitation and presentation skills • Good report writing, communication and  conflict resolutions skills • A valid Code B driver’s licence.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:


  • Provide leadership and strategic vision for the Biodiversity and Water Security Project.
  • Facilitate co-operative governance, collaboration and partnerships to strengthen institutions to deliver biodiversity benefits.
  • Ensure strategic oversight and effective operational management to implement the Biodiversity and Water Security Project.
  • Demonstrate and share the value of biodiversity and ecological infrastructure to for national development.
  • Fulfil senior management responsibilities.



    SANBI offers an all-inclusive remuneration package of R898 743.00 per annum.
