SANBI is seeking to appoint a hardworking and self-motivated individual to ensure the wellbeing of the Succulent Team on a permenant basis as a Senior Foreman.


The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires the services of a hardworking and self-motivated individual to ensure the wellbeing of the Succulent Team and section by overseeing and directing the smooth day-to-day operations while implementing horticultural best practice in the xerophytic plant collections in the Succulent Nursery, Botanical Society Conservatory, Mesemb Banks and the Matthews Rockery sections. 


The successful candidate must have sound interpersonal relations, good staff supervisory skills, problem solving skills, good spoken and written command of English and one other official language will be advantageous.  The position requires the candidate to have Grade 10 certificate with 5 years’ relevant experience working including supervisory experience.   It would be advantageous if the successful candidate has experience in botanical garden maintenance and development, maintaining of living collections and a pesticide spraying certificate.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently as well as in a team and use a variety of equipment and tools used which require physical labour and working outdoors, sometimes under adverse conditions as well as working with materials that may be poisonous/toxic.  In addition, the candidate must have the ability to plan daily, weekly and longer term activities for these sections.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:

  • Garden Planning & Maintenance - Assist with drafting and supervising of implementation of work plans for team members;
  • Garden Development - Assist in developing plans to create new/improved living displays –planting, lawns, pathways and other hard landscaping as well as Supervise and organize the team;
  • Plant Cultivation  - Supervise the maintenance and healthy cultivation of plants within the section;
  • Assist with labelling, plant recording, correct weed and alien removal and waste control;
  • Responsible for the section’s garden assets, stock issued to the team, flagging and overseeing repair and maintenance;
  • People management - supervise, mentoring, interviewing, performance assessments etc of the team;
  • Assist with queries if approached by the public;
  • Compliance with the Health and Safety policy.


SANBI offers an annual salary R127 851.00 with additional fringe benefits.
