The high school biodiversity career expo was held at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden on 7 October 2016. The aim was to create awareness about various careers that are found within the biodiversity sector and also to create a platform for learners to engage with some of the scientist and professionals that work with biodiversity on a daily basis.

EXPO 2Two schools from the Ekurhuleni North district, Jiyane Secondary and Etwatwa Secondary, were invited to be part of this career guidance day. The expo was also attended by children of SANBI staff members, as this was hosted during the school holidays. Various stakeholders such as University of South Africa, Agricultural Research Council, South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and Pretoria National Zoological Garden were invited to exhibit and provide information about the work they do in their respective fields or professions. SANBI staff members from the National Herbarium and Biodiversity Information and Policy Advice also participated in the expo.

EXPO 1Leaners spent their time gathering information at different stations of stakeholders that participated in the event and most of the learners found that the day was productive.

‘This was an informative and a right platform for us to learn about some of the careers that we didn’t know that they exist and I will do botany at University of Johannesburg (UJ) when I finish my matric in two year time,’ said Ngobile Tshamlambo, a grade 10 learner from Etwatwa Secondary.

The partners who exhibited also appreciated having been invited to participate in this expo. ‘This was a successful, well-prepared and organised event with dedicated, motivated and committed learners and who are so concerned about their future,’ said Mrs Elizabeth Louw from the Counselling and Career Development division at the University of South Africa.

EXPO 3SANEDI once again sponsored the transport for and catering of the expo. Furthermore, it was a great pleasure to have the Gauteng Department of Education officials from the Ekurhuleni District present at the expo.
