The Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers programme (CREW) has launched a coffee table book, 'Plants in Peril', in celebration of its 10th anniversary alongside the Botanical Society of South Africa’s (BotSoc) centenary.

CREW is a wonderful example of the strong partnership between SANBI and BotSoc, and it was fitting that this book be launched at a key event in BotSoc’s history – the centenary fundraising gala dinner in September.

The book which profiles 100 critically endangered plants – one for every year of BotSoc’s centenary – aims to highlight the factors threatening their survival and raise awareness of the actions required for their conservation. According to Domitilla Raimondo, one of the authors of the book and programme manager of SANBI’s CREW programme, South Africa has 2553 plant species currently threatened with extinction. This means that one in four of South Africa’s plants are of conservation concern.

The book is on sale at Botanical Society Bookshop, Kirstenbosch and at the SANBI Bookshop, Pretoria. However, the CREW KwaZulu-Natal node has a limited number of books on sale on a first come first serve basis while stocks last. Should you be interested in purchasing a copy from the CREW KZN Node, please email Suvarna Parbhoo.
