weed buster event - KZN NBGIn celebration of weed buster week on the environmental calendar, the KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden (KZN-NBG) hosted the Weed Buster Week and Clean-up campaign on the 5th of October 2017.

However, due to heavy rainfall, the clean-up campaign could not take place, only allowing for the weed buster event and a key note address on weeds.

The aim of this prestigious event is to educate the public and various NGOs and NPOs about Invasive alien plants and pollution. This has a negative impact on the conservation of biodiversity at the KZN-NBG and its surrounding communities. Locals attended the event, as well as Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) eco-tourism students.

Mbuso ZondiSANBI’s Mbuso Zondi, delivered an educational key note address, highlighting the negative impact invasive alien plants have on the ecological integrity of the natural systems in the KZN-NBG. He pointed out how alien plants inhibited the productive potential of the land, the health of estuaries, water quality and quantity and the livelihoods of people.

A number of examples of alien plant were discussed, with Chromolaena odorata being described as one of the biggest threats in the Zululand region.

KZN NBG appreciates the assistance and sponsorship from Creative Arts College, Bluff Meat Supply (PMB), Oasis and KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.

We would also like to thank event organisers, Ndumiso Dladla and Mr Bongumusa Nyanisa, interns from DUT under the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority programme.
